A year and a half after the official release of both the Xbox One and the PS4, we've seen the Xbox One already slash it's price $50. Could the PS4 be far behind? As of February 2015, Sony has stated that NO price cut is planned for the PlayStation 4. If you want it, better get the $400 together.

To figure out the price based on hardware, we can compare it to what it would be like if someone were to build a computer with similar specifications as the console is essentially made up of computer components. We know that the PlayStation 4 will feature an AMD 8-core processor with a 1.84 TFLOPS Radeon-based graphics engine. In addition, it will sport 8 GB GDDR5 memory, a built-in hard drive and a Blu-ray/DVD drive running at 6x and 8x speed, respectively.

Let's start with the processor; AMD sells an 8-core processor on its own website for $160. It also sells the 2 TFLOPS Radeon HD 6870 for another $145, which also has 2 GB of GDDR5 memory. Though it is more powerful than the PlayStation 4 with 2 TFLOPS, it has a quarter of the memory expected for the console, so we can even out the difference in price. Hard drives for the PlayStation 3 ranged in a number of sizes, but the PS4 will come with a 500GB hard drive. This can cost anywhere between $100 and $150, depending on the brand name and speed. Finally, a Blu-ray/DVD drive for a computer would run about another $50 on average.

Playstation 4 Price and Cost DetailsWith these basic components, a similarly-equipped computer would cost about $450 to $505, depending on the website or store you buy each item from. This kind of price is actually within the confines of what Asahi, a well-known Japanese publication, guessed the cost of the PlayStation 4 would be.

When you look back at the PlayStation 3, which released for about $600, it makes sense that Sony would not want to repeat this mistake; with such a high price, sales suffered as gamers were too hesitant to spend such a fee on a console. $399 was a smart move on their part, that's for sure.

In terms of the lower price this time around, Sony Worldwide Studios vice president Michael Denny has been quoted as saying "We want a system that can reach as broad a gaming audience as possible. We have created a console absolutely focused on gamers – and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well."

What this means is that Sony realizes the pricing mistakes it made on the PlayStation 3 by originally pricing the console not only out of reach for casual gamers but hardcore gamers as well. It's nice to see that they haven't made the same mistake twice. Another smart move on Sony's part was keeping games at the same price and not restricting the use of pre-owned games. Since the PS4 comes with a decently sized hard drive, an HDMI cable, and the controller, there won't be any required accessory purchase out of the box.

It's been over a year now since the console released and we've seen no price drops. That being said, various bundles have surfaced during the holiday season. The announcement of a 20th Anniversary PS4 has also brought a new stylized design into the fold. While Xbox has since lowered their price and made the Kinect optional, PS4 still continues to sell strong. It's all thanks to Sony's wise decision to keep the system priced at something far more reasonable than PS3's launch price.

$700 seems like a fair price to me

Sony can make an awesome system that will blow the 720 out of the water at $700. If they upgrade the current cell tech or go with a different processor, since a quad core is basically the same idea as a CELL processor. Throw in some top graphics and at least 8gb ddr3, and of course support the 4k HD, with future upgrades to a projection tech. Throw in a SSD for the operating system. Even if the msrp is around $1k it would be worth it. But if sony wants to make a console that is cheaper but expandable, that would be great too. For instance the base model of the console has 4gb ram, but you can buy an upgrade of 8 or even 16 at the launch or later. This may help it fit in to some family's budget. They could even get ride of the disk drive altogether and go to flash drives for games. With usb 3.0 tech on some of the 32gb Flash drive they are around $20 at tigerdirect, and these will just continue to get cheaper, bigger, and better. If this lowers the cost of the console at launch and makes the games operate faster then im all for it. You could put dlc on the drive for that certain game or if you dl the entire game, put it on an empty flash or external hdd. There are many ways that sony can reduce the cost of the ps4, and still use the current tech and future tech in the process.

What are you thinking

What the hell !!! ,it should be 100-199 because if it was over that no one would buy it because it would be too much money & play station wouldn't make any money any way most kids play video games and no perent would pay over 700$ for a game system, you mite as well keep playing ps3 jack!!!

What's wrong with you

U can't be serious. You all are out of your damn minds if you think the ps4 is going to be less than 500 dollars. The original ps3 was 600. The technology is only going to get better therefore it's going to cost more. If your a sony executive and you know that production costs for the ps4 is likely going to be around 800-1000 per unit then why the hell would you sell it for anything less than 600. Plus America loves technology. I mean ppl line up to buy the lastest iPhone or android or ipad, laptop or any other device that barely do more than its predecessor and are willing to pay 500-800 for them everydayso why not a gaming system that we know your gonna have for years b4 a ps5. Whereas that iPhone gonna be replaced nxt year sometimes mere months later by something better. Furthermore PlayStation is a brand. It is a household name which many of us grew up with. Adults and children alike play

You really are clueless about why PS3 cost that much.

The price of the technologies PS3 is built around were far more expensive than stuff that could be used to build a console capable of running todays most demanding game engines well in 1080p 60FPS today. PS3 had an expensive CPU called the Cell Broadband Engine, Bluray, expensive RAM. HDDs have come down in price, Bluray drives have gone from costing £120+ to build in 06, down to about £20 for something that's faster & more efficient, even fast RAM that exists today is cheaper than what's in PS3. Seriously the only part that will cost a lot in PS3 is the GPU & even if Sony went with AMD's best desktop GPU, adapted to Sony's requirements they'd probably still pay less than half of retail to get it into PS4. If you or anyone actually does research on what's required for tomorrow's games and what it takes to run the likes of EPIC's Unreal Engine 4, Squaresoft's Luminous Engine, Dice's Frostbite, etc then you'd see what's needed. The main guy responsible for PS3's cell vision has now left the playstation devision, Kaz Hirai is the main guy responsible to Sony's games now, he wants a capable machine that's reasonable for people to buy, so that Sony can get back to owning the console games industry. A machine that isn't accessible to anyone but a few people at launch isn't going to be what Sony's releasing this time. A £500+ console is not what we'll be getting. For sony to build a machine capable of running UE4 at full 1080p with the majority of effects turned on, high levels of detail & at a frame rate of at least 30FPS we're looking at an AMD APU, built around either 4 Bulldozer, or 8 Jaguar cores, an 7970m processor & 4GB of GDDR5 RAM (this is based on current dev kit rumours, but fits with requirements of what it takes to run modern game engines, especially considering there's meant to be an APU which is mroe efficient than having separate processing tech). Expect no more than the £450 if PS4 has a basic dual shock controller or maybe some Move varient. If it comes with a tablet then that could drive prices up to £500. Yes people are willing to pay that sort of money for iPhones/Pads, tablets, laptops, etc, but given how much it costs to make a console that can run modern games well, even with advanced controllers & pretty powerful processors today at most it will cost what PS3 cost at launch, with inflation, which is around £500 & that's without Sony really taking much of a loss. Everyone dealing with this subject has to think logically about how the console games industry works, how consoles are built around technology from other manufacturers, in this case it's mainly AMD, for the APU/CPU/GPU, Samsung or some other company for RAM, Bluray drives are probably made in-house unless they can be manufactured cheaper by another company, HDDs is the same deal, that's what makes up a console innerds. People need to understand that Sony won't pay RRP, Amazon prices or whatever for their parts. Dollars to pounds there will probably be a $50 increase over whatever PS4 retails for at launch in the UK, least that's how it works for Wii U right now. It's doubtful that PS4 will cost more than $550. This console certainly won't cost $800, let alone a grand, that just doesn't seem possible with how the industry, profit systems etc work for Sony. Sony makes a loss on initial hardware, making their money back, then profiting off of Software & Peripherals. Swallowing the cost of a couple of games with the hardware & maybe some extra controllers, PSN+ Sony can break even on each console quite quickly this time around. Considering most owners of PS4 will probably buy more than 20 games for their console profiting off of 17 games or something means billions in profits for Sony over the life of PS4. If PS4 sells similar numbers to PS3 then being conservative 60 million consoles will be sold in about 7 years, say 10 games are sold & make a profit per console, that's 600 million games sold, if each of those games made Sony £10, that's six billion pounds or nearly 10 billion dollars over 7 years. Sony only cares about the profits they'll make overall. If they sell 20 million games to Playstation customers every year they're making hundreds of millions of pounds every year off of the playstation gaming brand. Every company wants to make money, they don't have to charge a 800 dollars per console to make a profit.

PS4 Price...

In order for sony to bring out something properly next-gen then they will need a launch tag of around £350 ($550). Expect an X-Box beater!!!

I will pay whatever Sony will charge for PS4, hopefuly up to £600

I think it should be in

I think it should be in between 300 min to 490 max cuz not many parents for example want to pay that amount that's pretty pricey for a gaming systems 700 $ and I'm shore it will be more then that

Think business

You have to understand that if youre openly willing to pay $500 - $700 they'll easily add an extra $300 on top of that. I think they should list it no higher than $500 considering the games alone will be $60-$70 ea. If they expect to blow the new xbox out of the water then a price like that is what it'll take.

Price 350 -499

Between $499-$699

That's most likely, I think!

i what to paid like about 250-450 because i do have a lot of money

price drop

I think the best way to beat the competitors would be to lower their cost of production, nothing beats the xbox like "the same price but better"

It's going to be pricey

I Don't expected it to be any less than $500... My guess, $500 -$700, around that range.

Sony PS4

I think the price should be around $800 or more! The features will probably be amazing and mind blowing. I hope they include lots of things that the PS3 should have had.

100% agree

yep,, im with you . or atleast bring out diff models .one for the hardcore (bigger specs) and a model for the not so hardcore

cost of play station 4

I know that play station 4 is going to be a really a big hit but it should not be over 800$ but i am 11 years and i really love play station band i would put the price around $299.85

wait a bit. the price will drop.

i just bought my god dam ps3 replacement at christmas

If they can make it significantly better than xbox 720 but keep the price within $50-100 dollars of it with the free online service playstation will return to head of the gaming industry. I do hope they maintain the dual shock controllers as some games will lack the same feel and play ability with a tablet

Beats Xbox 720

It should be lower than xbox 720 cause then it will be a giant HIT and Then everybody will be talking about it and black ops 3 should come out for Tha ps4

todays economy

In todays economy not that many house holds will be able to afford an $800 unit.

people here are crazy

lets see cpu $50 gpu $65 8gb memory $100 hdd $70 blu ray drive $25 controller$20-$100 others $50 = $399 to $499 price tag but seeing that sony always sells there consoles at a loss im betting on $350 to $399

-.- WTF are you smoking?

Dude. No GOOD cpu costs $50 i know that firsthand seeing as I am a competitive PC gamer. Only the AMD Sempron could meet that cost, and boy, that CPU sucks, you need to be realistic here. I would like something Core i5ish in the PS4 which is at least $250. Now a $65 GPU??? Oh my god, we want something that will last us 6-10 years, not something we'll throw out tommorow after we see the pixelation. For any decent GPU that can run Battlefield 3 on Ultra settings it costs $90+ and that's cutting it a bit close.

You don't seem to know consoles too much

Remember PC requires a lot higher CPU and GPU to even run games period. Same delio with the RAM, on Consoles RAM runs 3x-4x faster than PC, So a dual core would most likely be better than a quad core. Consoles run faster because they don't need to run additional junk in the background. Considering Battlefield 3 runs at damn near the same quality with no problem. And it had 256mb of RAM in it.

Ps4 and 720 Xbox

If everyone holds out on buying it they would be forced to lower the price. I'm not going to buy it till at least a year after release date I refuse to get a red ring of death system again or a ps3 freeze frenzy. Just wait save your money and wait for price drops and bug fixes. It's not like the ps4 or 720 are going anywhere.

Let Others

like the WiiU it'll probably have something wrong first day. I would just get it but not play/install anything for the majority of the day

ps4 why?

i hope they make the system for around 400euro's than 3 months later its 300 and after that it goes down

PS4 will cost ....

I concur with some of the people on here. PS4 will likely cost between 500 and 800 depending on 'the options' that they may offer such as bigger hard drive, bluetooth, etc. And yes, good luck selling PS4 for over 500 when there are many people struggling to make ends meet. Gaming is a 'want' not a a 'need' and I am a hardcore gamer.

PS4 price

When Atari 2600 first came out in 1977 it cost $599. When Intellivision first came out in 1981(in my area anyways) it cost $800. A lot of people settled on Tandyvision (RadioShack model) for $700. The game cartridges averaged $35-$50. Microsurgeon by Imagic for Intellivision sold for $70. So the price of consoles have stayed the same for 35 years. Their worth every penny. We used to drop $40 at the arcades every weekend.

Think about it guys. I got my PS3 at best buy the following month of its release date for about $675 dollars. My guess is its going to be $800

I'll pay no matter how expensive the PS4 is

I can't wait for a PS4. I'll buy a PS4 once the Sony releases the PS4. I am willing to pay up to $2,000 for a PS4. Money is not a problem when it comes to fun.

me too

pending specs,,,, i to would pay top dollar for a top product

I'd say it'll start around 800$ and maybe drop to 600$ after a while

To Much

If It Cost Over 800$$ People Will Not Buy It Because Its Just A Game,,I Think It Should Start At 500$$,,Because If It Be Over,700$$ People Will Not Buy It Then Every One Is Goin To Switch To Xbox Because PS4 Is To High And Because Xbox Have Better Graphics

For you my friend, I

For you my friend, I recommend you take the 500 dollars and save up for an English class.

They've already confirmed

They've already confirmed that the ps4 is going to be more powerful than the next gen xbox and they will both have the same graphics card.

Wtf? Ps3 always has better- than-Xbox graphics

wait on it

shortly after it came out and dropped in price I bought a ps3 and it only worked for about a month or so...I was a dumbass and bought another one right after it happened...guess what happened? damn thing broke again..and for that reason I do not trust sony...or Microsoft for that matter.

You are correct, you are a

You are correct, you are a dumbass. I'd have had my console swapped out twice under warranty for free.

hope is all we have

i bet that it would be under 400 bucks so i hope it is at the max 399.99 so i win

The price

If Sony had the price to 400.00 to 500.00 and the Controller be around 65.00$ it would add up to 465,00 to 565.00 with the games and all that people would buy It would add more money to Sony and after it all done ps3 Should be 499.99 and the games after would add up to about 700.00 dollars with the games . If any more am going back to Xbox If Sony see all the comments people are dumb to pay over 800.00$ For one bc why the fun being the only one online to all ps3 people Do u agree with the price of this 499.99 pulse with games u buy after 699.99 let get this message across to Sony. Because they want the people To be happy this is the way and for last but not least put Last of us on ps4 and the controller is so going to be amazon So let go Sony because I really don't want to go back to Xbox And pay to play online so feb 20,2013 let's us know the price And the relased date and the controller and the system it self let us see ur Amazon plans to make ur people happy rocks even of the price is to High and maybe have to go Back to Xbox

MAYBE if it could.....

I would probably get it for $300-$500 because when you add up alll of the prices of accsessories and games then it could be a considerable amount of money, and what about all of the games that you have bought for the ps3, would we be able to play those games like early versions of ps3's could play ps2 games?WOULD WE?!

R&D Costs

Well I can't believe it'll be as much as the PS3 considering for that Sony built it's own cell processor with IBM whereas for the PS4 they're using off the shelf PC parts. So their research costs will be much lower. Also, just a quick google and slot loading blue ray drives can be had for $150/£100...a little lower than $400. I think it would be a mistake for sony to price it any higher than the PS3. A max of £350 would be good.

yeah right!

it will cost an arm and a leg just like the ps3 did. Im not paying $700 when I am getting the Wii-U as soon as my income taxes come through.

f that.....

I'll pay $300 for it...nothing more. I'll stick with my ps3 until they completely stop making games for it and by then they will have announced a ps5 or something. Plus more then likely they will come out with better versions of the ps4 then the orginal one they released with a smaller price tag just like they did with ps2 and Ps3..
