A year and a half after the official release of both the Xbox One and the PS4, we've seen the Xbox One already slash it's price $50. Could the PS4 be far behind? As of February 2015, Sony has stated that NO price cut is planned for the PlayStation 4. If you want it, better get the $400 together.

To figure out the price based on hardware, we can compare it to what it would be like if someone were to build a computer with similar specifications as the console is essentially made up of computer components. We know that the PlayStation 4 will feature an AMD 8-core processor with a 1.84 TFLOPS Radeon-based graphics engine. In addition, it will sport 8 GB GDDR5 memory, a built-in hard drive and a Blu-ray/DVD drive running at 6x and 8x speed, respectively.

Let's start with the processor; AMD sells an 8-core processor on its own website for $160. It also sells the 2 TFLOPS Radeon HD 6870 for another $145, which also has 2 GB of GDDR5 memory. Though it is more powerful than the PlayStation 4 with 2 TFLOPS, it has a quarter of the memory expected for the console, so we can even out the difference in price. Hard drives for the PlayStation 3 ranged in a number of sizes, but the PS4 will come with a 500GB hard drive. This can cost anywhere between $100 and $150, depending on the brand name and speed. Finally, a Blu-ray/DVD drive for a computer would run about another $50 on average.

Playstation 4 Price and Cost DetailsWith these basic components, a similarly-equipped computer would cost about $450 to $505, depending on the website or store you buy each item from. This kind of price is actually within the confines of what Asahi, a well-known Japanese publication, guessed the cost of the PlayStation 4 would be.

When you look back at the PlayStation 3, which released for about $600, it makes sense that Sony would not want to repeat this mistake; with such a high price, sales suffered as gamers were too hesitant to spend such a fee on a console. $399 was a smart move on their part, that's for sure.

In terms of the lower price this time around, Sony Worldwide Studios vice president Michael Denny has been quoted as saying "We want a system that can reach as broad a gaming audience as possible. We have created a console absolutely focused on gamers – and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well."

What this means is that Sony realizes the pricing mistakes it made on the PlayStation 3 by originally pricing the console not only out of reach for casual gamers but hardcore gamers as well. It's nice to see that they haven't made the same mistake twice. Another smart move on Sony's part was keeping games at the same price and not restricting the use of pre-owned games. Since the PS4 comes with a decently sized hard drive, an HDMI cable, and the controller, there won't be any required accessory purchase out of the box.

It's been over a year now since the console released and we've seen no price drops. That being said, various bundles have surfaced during the holiday season. The announcement of a 20th Anniversary PS4 has also brought a new stylized design into the fold. While Xbox has since lowered their price and made the Kinect optional, PS4 still continues to sell strong. It's all thanks to Sony's wise decision to keep the system priced at something far more reasonable than PS3's launch price.

Well then those 20 people are mentally retarded. I've had my Ps3 for a year and it's still going strong. :]

For Real

I have Had My PS3 For 3 years and it is still going strong...So u Need To Stop It wit The Breakdown Crap I Dont Kno Anybody Who Has Had That Problem!!!

who cares about it being hacked?

the USA's fbi was hacked by the same people who hacked the PSN, they are a real hacking organization, not a fat ass sitting in his mom's basement. To stay on topic, I had 4 xbox 360 all broke within 3-5 months after that I switched to ps3 and now I have had it for 4 years and never had a problem, except with the servers going down of course, but it wasn't their fault.

Xbox Haters

If your and PS4 Hater GTFO its only playstation and or both system fans. Not just xbox lovers only. If you know you don't like Playstation we don't need you comment thank you. P.S Stop Hatting.

Until the Xbox 720 is unveiled, you shouldn't talk, either.

The Xbox 720 hasn't been unveiled yet. You have no argument. And if you try to claim that the 360 is a better system than the PS4, then I honestly don't know what to say. It's 10X more powerful, and it has one of the easiest developing architectures out there. The reason the PS3 didn't have so many exclusives is because it had a difficult coding environment for the developers, and many were turned away. With this new simple architecture, all sorts of developers are looking at PS4. So there's going to be PLENTY of games on the PS4. I'm not saying there'll be more than the 720. But that console hasn't been unveiled yet.

yes sir

If the ps4 is going to be a little different from the ps3 then the price ps3 are now if they are way different then I'd pay up too 550 I paid 400 for the 320 system the month it came out..

I'm in...

Lets start this at a cool grand

$450.00 top.....

$400.00 Tops

I wouldn't go more than $400.00 If it's too expensive, well then there is always Xbox. Sony needs to price it right in order to get people to buy it. Also, price it low enough and you'll take Microsoft fans away from the Xbox.

Give 'em a break

Sony's gonna keep it as cheap as they can. They're not stupid. If it costs $600 it's because they simply can't afford to keep the price down any more. If it only costs $400 or so then, yes, it would be much more successful purely in game sales AND console sales. Everyone needs to just give Sony a break. We got some time to wait to see what price they decide on. For now, we're just gonna have to hope it's cheap enough to afford. If it's too expensive, find another hobby. There're always other things you could spend your time doing instead of 'gaming'. Having said that, I absolutely CAN'T WAIT for it's release! It's gonna be great. We all know that much. I just hope the game costs stay down since that's where the majority of the money is really going when investing in a game system. If it's a $750 system for whatever reason but the majority of games are $30-40 or so instead of $60, then I think we could all deal with paying the $750.

it will be pricy

I think that obviously it is going to be about over $750 because the technology these days are just unbelievable and also EBgames is already saying it is going to cost $899 for the PLACEHOLDER PRICE

not 700 or more

I severely doubt it will be 700+. Sony saw the problem with high launch prices with the PS3. People can't really afford to spend that much at the best of times, let alone during recessions. Plus the simple fact is that for 700 dollars or more you can get a nice laptop that does all this and more. Hell my laptop was only about 800 dollars and it plays blueray AND does taxes. :P

PS4 Cost

PS4 Cost is over 750 $

PS4 price

Well I think it will be around 225-400 euro because if they make it anymore then they wont sell alot and if they dont sell a max amount of units then they wont get theyr money back for making them and if the price isn't low enough or to high then a majority wont be able to buy it so less money is being made for the PS4 so my though is that it will be cheap enough just a tad dearer than the ps3 is thats my idea anyways cant wait till it comes out;P

Wouldnt it be great

I think that if sony demands a hight retail price for the ps4 they should sell some of their games for the ps3 so we could get some insight on what to expect instead of dropping money down and hoping for the best.

i think they let us test the games but on ps3

If sony want to put a giant cost on the ps4 i think that the should sell the games intended for ps4 on the ps3 so we could at least get a mindset on the games for the ps4 before we go out to buy one if its even going to be worth it at first.

RE: testing ps4 games on ps3

they are doing that with "Watch Dogs" I'm not sure about the other games though... Would be great.

Great idea!

I honestly believe the price tag of the Playstation 4 will be $600 +. The previous one was selling out of stock for that price and the PS4 features custom built technology way beyond the PS3. Yes, technological advancements always make tech cheaper and cheaper, but considering how many new features it will have built in and available for purchase, the price tag wont be lower than the PS3 at release. Sony would not be able to afford the development and man hours if they price it at $300. New technology is expensive.

price will fall

When I bought my ps3 I also purchased a 46" television at the same time. I spent $1700 for the system and the television. Two months later the exact same television and the better ps3 came out in a combo pack at $800, $900 cheeper. I think I will wait. I would'nt be suprised if the console is near a grand at first but after all the wealthy individuals purchase it the price will fall a great amount so the sensable individuals will purchase it also.

i think your right about that. Buying something when it just comes out, thats stupidity. Waiting for the prices to drop thats smart. off course you wouldn't want to spend over 700 for a game station.

It's not stupidity if you

It's not stupidity if you have the money for it. Some people don't need to be as cautious.

Blu Ray??? Really???

Thought they said that the blu ray was dead and to cut costs on the next system it wouldnt be there. hey if it comes out at $400-500 fine I wont complain but anything more then that means your still paying for something you just dont need. Oh then theres the fact that its only got 8gigs of memory. With the goal of going totally digital downloads I dont think this is nearly enough storage. Please sony be smart. Do away with the blu ray and add atleast another 8 gigs.

As stated...

As stated, this isn't HD memory space, this is RAM. (video memory). The PS3 goes has only 256MB of RAM. And it has up to 500GB of Hard Drive space, so why would next-gen hardware have far less, when games are bigger digital downloads are on the rise, would need a LOT more space, anyways? And Blue-Ray is plenty quick. It isn't even CLOSE to dead. There's rumor of a quad layer disk in development that can store 100GB of stuff. There was never any mention of Blue-Ray dying.

cloud storage

im pretty sure everything will be saved online. I havent read to much into it at all but im fairly sure everything is saved online.

by memory they are talking

by memory they are talking about ram and it is going to still have blu ray

I'll be patient and wait a few years for the prices to drop. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy the super-slim PS3 system I got for Christmas :)

Thank God I found someone

Thank God I found someone that sense and logic. It's smart to just wait for the price to drop think about it, all the games you can get for when the prices drop.

I'm amazed this hasn't been mentioned...

There's been SEVERAL leaks of the PS4's price being around $430-530. I don't know where this "more expensive than PS3" idea is coming from, let alone $1000. The PS3 was so expensive because of Sony's experimental Cell processor, and there innovative Blue-Ray drive. At the time, these pieces of hardware were EXTREMELY expensive to produce. Sony was still losing money on the console a few years AFTER it's release. The PS4 is using more conventional hardware, and the Blue-Ray drive has been sorted out and is very inexpensive to produce now, and has been for a while. That's why the PS3 can compete with the 360's price nowadays. The PS4 is simply NOT going to be more expensive than the PS3. And, as I already stated, the PS4 has had several price leaks from various sources.

I am willing to pay up to $600 ill be the first few in line for it. nice xmas gift for me since its coming around the holidays..HO HO HO to all.

I've never had a gaming console and I know for a fact that I am getting this one. @ what ever price.

gas prices vs PS4 price...

Oil companies can raise costs on gas prices because we have become dependant on gas to fuel our cars. I see Sony doing the same thing despite the low cost on building the system. They will probably use this excuse to raise the PS4's price: "Due to the poor economy we here at Sony have had to make certain cutbacks. Because of this the new PS4 will be released on time but at limited stock..." Then be prepared to see probably one of the biggest price spikes in the history of video games. God, I hope I'm wrong.......

my opinion

for every one comparing the ps3 and 360, i had a 360 for after about 2 months and its broke down, then i had the original ps3 and it broke down after about a year and a half. i bought both brand new when first came out. the only problem i see with the ps3 is hackers and maintenance to get rid of hackers but im sure xbox has had hackers too. so lets say the xbox 720 and ps4 hit same day i bought them both which would last longer? just think about that dont answer just think cuz honestly i would expect the 720 to be broke in 2 months like the 360 did playstation 4 life

How much did you play it?

I had my launch 360 until I sold it 3 months ago, never overheated, never broke down. I put thousands of hours into it, playing it on weekends 16-18 hours a day, and 4-6 on weekdays. I put it through hell and never had a problem with it. However during the time I had my 360, my friend Gaige was going through 6 ps2s and 4 ps3s, not to mention a few gamecubes. So the argument goes both ways.

Lack of Durability

I have had issues with both the 360 and the PS3. I was always a Halo guy so I was always all about having a 360. One after another they continued to mess up (usually something to do with the disc reader) and I kept buying another. Finally, after my 12th 360 gave out (none lasting more than a year or a little over) I gave up and bought a PS3. After a year and a couple of months that PS3 gave out on me. Surprise surprise it was the loading mechanism on the PS3 and would have been a minimum $100 to fix it. I bought another PS3 at the end of last year and I'm still waiting to see what happens (considering the guy I spoke with at PS support said that what happened to my 1st PS3 was a common problem). So, I guess all I'm saying is there are durability issues with both systems which I'm sure will be a problem with the systems still to come. No matter how far into the future gaming goes there will always be the issue of durability. It's just like with cars for instance. The capability of making a car that would last 10 fold what cars do today is possible but that doesn't leave much room for the return profit. It's the same with gaming systems. The technology and engineering advancements to make a system capable of lasting far longer than systems today are plausible.......but if we aren't having to repair and buy more of the same system the come-back profit would be lost. Just something to think about......

Well thruthfully i plan on selling my 360 and everything to be able toget most of money to buy it im willing to pay 700 because im going into college and i wont be playing alot so im not gonna pay microsoft to play when i wont be on alot so il save more that way.....but this is gonna be a great sytem

Im willing to pay AT MOST $600.

i hope its only 399 at most. i'm only 13 and i've grown up my whole life playing PS consoles

$300-500 sounds just about right for a new gaming system. I don't mind spending a little money as long as I'm getting a good quality product along with it that will last. Bought my Xbox 360 about a year after it was released and had the same one ever since. The only replacement I needed was a new controller because the left joystick was getting stuck slightly to the left making playing COD and Grand Theft Auto 4 nearly impossible. My biggest problem with the Xbox 360 was the external hard drive which was an extra $100 externally. So my concern with the PS4 is the system I'm getting all I need to be able to play my games freely as I want? Without the external hard drive with the 360 you couldn't save anything! With the memory Call of Duty was taking up I barely had any space to download even the smallest of game demos.
