The PS4 comes with just about everything you need to get started. You get the system, power cable, HDMI cable, controller, and a charge cable. All you need is a game and you're good to go. Of course, once you unleash the beast that is the PS4, you'll quickly find out that what comes in the box just doesn't cut it.
That's where accessories come in. This massive industry brings tons of different companies together to bring you all of the extra bells and whistles you could every want or need. Today we'll take a look at the ones that are worth your time and give you some insight into just how spoiled we as gamers can be nowadays.
Do not be ashamed of your accessories my friends, they are the badges of honor upon your gaming haven's uniform. Everything from chargers, to camera, to wall mounts and steering wheels! It's all coming to you right now!
The Essential PS4 Accessories
Before we dive into our ultimate list, we first need to make sure you have the right TV for your gaming setup. We recommend something with full 1080p or 4K support (even though the PS4 doesn't support 4K). On top of this, you should look for something with burn-in protection, low input lag, and plenty of HDMI inputs.
Once you're setup with that, you can start thinking about accessories. Let's start with the basics, and then we'll move into the really specialized options.
These are the accessories that you can't do without. Even if you're budget it tight, make sure you have these present, or you're going to spend a lot of time waiting for things to charge or playing games alone.
1. DualShock 4 Wireless Controllers
I know it's kind of obvious, but the PS4 only comes with one controller. On top of this, it's just the standard black color. Come on, when there's options for red, blue, silver, camo, white, and even more colors, how can you just have one? Not to mention, how will you play local multiplayer games without at least another two or three controllers on hand? Yeah, looking pretty important now, isn't it?
2. PowerA DualShock 4 Controller Charging Station
Unless you want to sit there and plug in your controllers to charge with that tiny cable the PS4 comes with, you're going to want this ASAP. The battery life on the DualShock 4 isn't horrible, but it will disappear before you know it when you get into a good gaming marathon. Don't get caught with your controller's dead. Instead, plug this bad boy into the wall and charge them between sessions.
This is the one I use and it's a lifesaver, trust me.
3. 1-Year PlayStation Plus Membership - PS3/ PS4/ PS Vita [Digital Code]
PlayStation Plus is required to play games online, but not to use your apps like Netflix, which is nice. Instead of just stopping there though,Sony also thanks you for being a member with two free PS4 games each month! If you have a PS3 or PS Vita, you get free games on those consoles too! This thing pays for itself faster than you can say "download complete."
4. Dust-Off Compressed Gas Duster - 4 Pack - DPSXL4
I know what you're thinking. You think I've lost it, but hear me out on this. Your PS4 needs to be maintained, which means keeping dust and debris out of the immediate area and especially out of the system's fans and vents. Enter Dust-Off, my personal favorite solution. Basically it's just air in a can that sprays out really hard and fast. It has a little nozzle for you to blast out dust and anything else stuck in your PS4's vents (like pet hair in my case).
It's not expensive, but it is essential to keeping your PS4 happy and healthy.
It's Time to Treat Yourself
Now that we've covered the basics, it's time to have a little fun. These next items may not be absolutely required, but come on, you know you want them. Let's take a look.
1. PlayStation Gold Wireless Stereo Headset - Jet Black
I think we can all agree that there are some seriously awesome PS4 headsets out there, but this one is my favorite for the combination of price and fuctionality. This is a sleek and sexy wireless headset with virtual surround sound, and a cable to use them as headphones on your computer or Vita. At under $100, it's the perfect entry-level solution.
While it doesn't do much beyond The Playroom game and video chat, the PS4 Camera will be essential when the PlayStation VR headset releases, so get it while it's hot! I've used mine several times, and it works great for those live stream sessions on Twitch or YouTube.
3. Ortz PS4 Vertical Stand with Cooling Fan
There's vertical stands for the PS4, and then there's the the Ortz Gaming PS4 Vertical Stand with Cooling Fan. This beast of an accessory is a stand, cooling fan, and controller dock all in one! It's pretty sturdy, assuming you don't have kids or pets that may run into it. If you do, you may be better off keeping the PS4 in a more horizontal position.
Here's an idea: get your PS4 off the ground and up on the wall, towering above the peasant consoles below it. You can make it happen with the Forza Designs PS4 Wall Mount. In my experience with this accessory, I found it to be very stable and well designed. Go on, treat yourself.
5. PlayStation 4 Universal Media Remote
Tired of using your DualShock 4 for movies, Netflix, and streaming apps? Yeah, me too. Not only does it drain the battery but the light bar is so distracting! Worry no longer my friends, for the PS4 Media Remote is here! With the ability to turn all of your devices on and off, and control every aspect of your PS4, you'll never need to drain your DualShock ever again!
The PS4 only ships with a 500GB hard drive, and while there's plenty you can do to keep your PS4 hard drive clean there's also the option to just replace it entirely without voiding your warranty. This example is four times larger than the hard drive it comes with, which should help with any space issues.
Money is No Object, Bring it On!
So let's assume you are a gamer with a bit of a budget, and you really just want to bring the house down with the best possible options. You've got all the things above and you're ready to really just set yourself up for the foreseeable future. Alright, check these out.
1. Thrustmaster VG T300RS Officially Licensed PS4/PS3 Force Feedback Racing Wheel
Who uses a controller for racing games these days (I do sadly)? No, if you're going to boot up something as complex as Project Cars, then you need the real feel of the track. Enter the ultimate Force Feedback Racing Wheel from Thrustmaster. This bad boy will make you feel like you're cutting it on the tracks with pedals to boot!
2. HORI Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai for PlayStation 3/4
Who plays fighting games with a controller anymore (I do sadly)? This is where the true fighting game fans live, right in the arcade with a tournament fight stick. Here we have one of the best options on the market for all of your Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter fans.
